Joanna Herrigstad, Washington
Joanna grew up in southeastern England during World War II. During the Battle of Britain, she was evacuated to her grandfather’s estate where she learned to ride at a neighboring farm. She progressed through Pony Club into fox hunting, showing, and as a working student into training, teaching, and point-to-point steeplechasing.
After emigrating to America, having a family, and learning dressage from Klaus Albin and Mella Van Brugen, Joanna competed up to Prix St. George and at Preliminary in Eventing through the 1970s and 80s. Between teaching and training, she started judging in 1982, co-organized 3-Day Events at Mountain Meadows, was Area VII chairman for a few years and also served as president of Equestrians Institute. Joanna was awarded the USCTA Governor’s Cup in 1987 and again in 2001.
